My Stepchild Is So Disrespectful to Me

The eye-roll when you ask them to put their plate in the dishwasher. Being talked over at dinner. "You're not my mum." Being completely ignored when you say good morning, in your own kitchen.

If your stepchild is rude or disrespectful to you, it can wear you down faster than almost anything else in stepfamily life. And it's hard to talk about, because people expect you to rise above it. You're the adult, after all. (I've got a whole podcast episode on how much that phrase grates.)

Why stepchildren can be so rude

It rarely starts with you. More often it's loyalty to their mum, grief about the separation, anger about changes they didn't choose, or a teenager doing what teenagers do, with you as the safest target.

And there's often a structural problem underneath. If you're trying to hold them to rules their dad doesn't back up, or rules that are different at their mum's, every request turns into a battle about who's in charge. I lived this one with the towel after bath-time. It was never about the towel.

What tends to make it worse

  • Telling them off yourself, especially in the early years

  • Matching their tone, or getting into a back-and-forth

  • Letting it go every time, so it slowly becomes normal

  • Your partner staying quiet, which tells everyone it's allowed

What helps

Agree one basic standard with your partner. They don't have to like you. They do have to be civil. That's reasonable in any home, and it's his job to hold it.

Respond calmly, briefly, and then walk away. "I don't speak to you like that, and I'd like the same back." Then leave the room. You're showing what's acceptable without getting pulled into a fight.

Let their dad deal with the consequences. Your job in the moment is to name it and step out. His job is what happens next.

Pick your battles. An eye-roll and a muttered "whatever" might not be worth a showdown. Swearing at you or being cruel absolutely is. Agree with your partner where that line sits.

Keep doing the small, kind things. A lift, a hot chocolate, asking about the match. It lets them know the door's open when they're ready, with no pressure to walk through it.

Having the words ready

Most of us freeze in the moment, then think of the perfect response at 2am. That's why I wrote What to Say When… Stepmum Scripts: more than 75 calm, ready-made things to say when your stepchild is rude, when you're being ignored, and when you need your partner to back you up.

Questions stepmums ask

How do I deal with a disrespectful stepchild?

Agree a basic standard of politeness with your partner, respond calmly and briefly in the moment, and let him handle any consequences.

Should I discipline my stepchild?

Usually not, especially in the first few years. Your partner should lead on discipline while you focus on being a steady, fair adult in the house.

What do I say when my stepchild says "you're not my mum"?

Something short and calm, like "You're right, I'm not. I'm still an adult in this house, and I'd like us to be kind to each other."
